Report of Impact of UF on the State Includes $1.43 BILLION in economic impact and 8,000 jobs from UF Spinoff Companies
UF had a total economic impact on the state of about $8.76 billion in the 2009-2010 fiscal year, with an employment impact of more than 100,000 jobs according to an IFAS study. Shands Healthcare and UF Physician outpatient practices had a $2.88 billion impact. UF last gauged its economic impact in the 2005-06 fiscal year but didn't count UF spinoff companies at that time. The new study found that those companies had a $1.43 billion economic impact and an employment impact of more than 8,000 jobs. So all of your efforts to build our innovation economy, where UF spinoffs and other companies can grow and thrive, are making a major impact on our community and state. http://www.gainesville.com/article/20110329/ARTICLES/110329385/-1/a....
Google Fiber Project
While we are disappointed that Gainesville was not chosen as the first community for this initiative, we are excited to hear that Google will be looking closely at ways to bring ultra high-speed internet to other cities across the country. With all of the assets in our innovation community, we feel that Gainesville is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this type of offering and look forward to taking part in future discussions with the company. We are appreciative for all of the community's enthusiasm displayed in the Gig4GNV project and we will look for ways to engage the community in discussions on how to advance this type of effort. Stay tuned! http://www.gainesville.com/article/20110330/ARTICLES/110339956/-1/a...
On another Google note, a Google vehicle has been roaming around Alachua County, updating information for Google Maps. The car has a 360-degree camera which is getting updated street-level photos for Google Maps, the online atlas that provides directions, transit information and photographs of the buildings, traffic and pedestrians on many of the world’s busiest streets. http://www.gainesville.com/article/20110331/ARTICLES/110339878/1139....
The Happiest Cities in America - We're #8!
This week, www.Care2.com came out with information on the Happiest Cities in America. Exactly how does a city attain this recognition? Well, Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index set out to determine the answer and the numbers were based on the results of telephone surveys with a random sample of 352,840 adults. Compilers of the index asked numerous questions about six sub-indexes: life evaluation, emotional health, work environment, physical health, healthy behaviors, and access to basic necessities. The overall score and each of the six sub-index scores were calculated on a scale from 0 to 100, where a score of 100 represents the ideal. Gainesville ranked #1 in the sub-index for Work Environment. This helped us to come in 8th overall - a great reflection on our employers, our economy. We make cool things happen!
