In talking to lots of people lately about entrepreneurs and startups, here's my question: Besides money, what are the 3 most important things needed by our startup companies, both inside and outside local incubators? Is it technical know-how? management? professional or technical development? more facility space? access to expertise? Commercial pathway planning? Other?

IATech is Flying High
GTEC startup IATech (Innovative Automation Technologies) was featured in the June 2009 edition of the North Central Florida Business Report. Check it out!

Article Excerpt—
Imagine an unmanned helicopter that is sophisticated enough to locate roadside bombs among the debris in war zones, or an unmanned plane that can swoop down and capture an enemy’s unmanned spy plane. Both vehicles may be in production soon, thanks to the innovative work of Erica and Donald MacArthur.

The two Gainesville engineers have created compact sensors that are the brains running those types of unmanned vehicles and are building them at the Gainesville Technology Enterprise Center (GTEC).

Dr. Machen said that the new incubator facility would be about 30,000 SF and would be located on the site that is currently occupied by Shands at AGH Hospital (which is scheduled to be closed at the end of 2009‎). Very exciting news for the Gainsville/Alachua County tech community!

Dr. Machen also mentioned the potential for another local incubator...anyone have updates to share on that effort?

In a speech to more than 300 inventors, investors, entrepreneurs and many others at the Annual UF Tech Showcase, UF President Dr. Machen cited recent GTEC graduate Sinmat, Inc. and current GTEC tenant WiPower, Inc. as major successes for the Gainesville/Alachua County tech community. Machen also quoted President Obama, “if necessity is the mother of invention, at this moment of necessity we need you. We need inventiveness."
