I have set them up. There are folks here who still do so. It is almost an out-of-the-box deal these days.I would not claim that a hotspot can be secure though. If it is a hotspot it is not secure. It can be encrypted. It can have access control which can be billed and metered. A true hotspot is just that hot, open and insecure. They are secured by the fact that they aren't connected in any way to the mission critical systems in the building. Some coffee houses have tracking for access. Others just open the WiFi up but set it to have a limited range. The latter strategy seems to be about as good as the first--just regulate the bandwidth and keep it truly segregated from your other systems.
