Booker Schmidt likes to point out that the Gainesville area has the most business incubators per capita with four in a county of about 250,000 people and a fifth opening soon. When the University of Florida opens the fifth — the Innovation Hub at the former Shands AGH site — that will likely mean fewer UF research spinout companies going to the Gainesville Technology Enterprise Center. Yet as GTEC approaches its 10th anniversary next month, Schmidt, its executive director, sees more than enough tech startup companies to go around with a growing group of UF students and graduates starting businesses around software, Web applications and other high-tech ideas.
