Calling all Project Managers: Want to start a local PMI Chapter?

Ever since I moved back to Gainesville (from Columbus, OH), I've missed being part of a dynamic project management community, including a large PMI (Project Management Institute, pmi.org) chapter. It's a pain to drive to Jax or Tampa or Orlando for those chapters' monthly dinner meetings.

In case you've never belonged to a PMI chapter, here's what they do:
- Monthly meetings centered around an educational speaker on a PM topic
- Job networking
- Training for taking the PMP certification exam
- Annual Professional Development Day to obtain continuing education credits

Also, we could be a sponsor/parent to a UF chapter, or at least a resource for teaching project management at UF. (Is project management taught anywhere within UF?)

So, show of hands, who would be interested in membership in a local PMI chapter?

I know there are some certified project managers at GAIN. I've talked to them. Make sure you mention this idea when we do the go-around-the room intros at a GAIN lunch if you haven't already. Would be very cool to have a chapter in town.
Hi David,
I would be very interested and am willing to help make it happen. I have heard that a degree in PM eventually may be offered locally, but not through UF. The local New Horizons Computer Learning Center offers a PMP course that leads to certification and it has generated some interest lately. I know some organizations in Gainesville do know and respect the PMP credential, but more awareness and understanding is definitely needed. Maybe you, me, Monika and other interested folks should get together to discuss it... maybe at the next GAIN luncheon?
Hi Pamela,
It's great to meet another local PMP -- I was wondering if there were any more of us in Gainesville!

Good idea about using the next GAIN luncheon to gather the local PM practitioners. It doesn't look like the next luncheon has been scheduled yet, but when they do we'll add a comment/notice about us PMs getting together there.

I will be at the January GAIN Mixer tomorrow and I hope to see you all there too. Let's try to huddle on the side, compare PM war stories, and see how we want to move forward.

I'm sorry I was unable to attend the GAIN mixer. Did you all get a chance to meet?
Unfortunately no. I was also at the monthly GAIN luncheon the next day, but arrived late from a meeting just before the actual program started, and then had to leave right away for a 1pm meeting. Sigh. Now that I've been to a monthly GAIN luncheon, I'll see if we can fit something structured in at the next one. I am willing to meet on our own if there is enough interest from you three, but I get the feeling from PMI that they want a dozen or so to start a chapter.

FYI to everyone, I am available to give free intro talks on project management. (I also have several canned talks, including Creating Corporate Strategy and Managing Agile Software Development.)

I'm just about to complete my PM degree at City College and I'd like to learn more.

Hi Scott,

I never got a lot of interest, so I had let this effort slip. I will mention it again at the next monthly GAIN luncheon (Jan 26) to see if there is more interest.  Also, if you know of non-GAIN people who might be interested (say PM instructors and students at City College) I would love to talk to them.

I will definitely bring up forming a local chapter with the folks at City College.
